2nd World Junior Wushu Championships 2008
The 2nd World Junior Wushu Championships was unveiled on Tuesday in Bali as eight teams had withdrawn from the competition, a local paper said.
The Bali event is going to last to Dec. 14 at Westin Hotel NusaDua Bali, with 22 gold medals on offer.
Forty-three teams took part in the championships after the withdrawal of eight.
Defending champion China, as well as the United States, will field a full squad of 20 athletes, the maximum allowed by the organizer.
Indonesia dispatched 17 athletes, with 11 to compete in taolu (artistic event) and six in san shou (fighting event).
In the inaugural event in Malaysia in 2006, China won most of the medals, taking home 16 golds and one silver, followed by Vietnam. Indonesia won one gold and three silvers in that tournament.
Aside from those wushu powerhouses, Ngatino said, the United States and Kazakhstan are forces to be reckoned with.
“U.S. athletes are known for much improved routines in taolo, while Kazakhstan’s athletes are have been in top form in san shou at recent contests,” he added.
“Hopefully, we can win more medals at the event,” he added.
Indonesia won one gold and three silver medals in the Kuala Lumpur tournament.
The Bali event will take place at the Westin Hotel in Nusa Dua, from Dec. 9 to 14 with 22 gold medals up for grabs.
The event will be a prelude to the biennial Southeast Asian Games, to be held in Vientienne, Laos, in 2009.
